Driving for 12 hours in a day
I need to drive from bristol to Inverurie and back and want to go a slightly longer route through the Cairngorms. Including stops it will take about 12 hours. Up on the Saturday back on the Monday. Anyone driven this sort of journey? Am I mental? I reason that the scenery will make the journey enjoyable for much of the route

Came back from Inverness to rural Lincolnshire the other week in about nine hours including stops. The Scottish highlands are absolutely fantastic. Went to the Inverness Highland games, would recommend going for a few hours if in the area but wouldn't make a special trip.

As I'm a ski-wanker, I've often driven back from Flaine in the French Alps in a one-er, about 16 hours. It's the four hour drive from Dover up to Lincolnshire which is the worst part!

Just got back after 11 hours on the road. Great experience, rediscovered old mixes and became acquainted with new ones. Highlands are enchanting. Wouldn’t think twice about doing it again

Just having a dump at Lancaster services. Departure was delayed somewhat as I copped off with a lesbian last night and went back to hers. Drunk a bit too much coffee but otherwise journey has been fine.

Couldn't do it now

Drove 28 hours straight in the US - tried to sleep a few times along the way but it was never going to happen so I’d drive on for a few more hours.

It’s easily possible, just take some short breaks if you start to get sleepy.

Driven from Dunkirk to Erfurt over that sort of time, and back a few days later.

But that was 20 years ago. Would definitely break each trip into two bits now.

My back wouldn't stand it, even if my mind might

I’ll be driving overnight to Bavaria next week to visit family. Have done it a fair few times. Eurotunnel then hit the motorway.

Wife and kids sleep and I’m king of the road! I like it and only stop for petrol if needed. Decent music and the roads being clear all help. About 10 hours if lucky. Always harder coming home and need a proper break. Probably because I’m dreading returning to the normal drudgery!

That's beautiful

A Sun salutation into upward farting dog, before bowing and heading to the shitter would be perfect

Drive 3 kids from the midlands down to the alps and back each year mate. If you lend me your bike and will drive them all down there so you can enjoy their chats and shite music and I can do it in peace on your bike then you are a brave man...!!

Joking aside I know what you mean but motorways are shit in whatever transport!

Love a nice long drive/road trip, either solo with music and snacks or with a passenger.

Haven't done any massive drives in the UK but a couple in the US (lovely for driving)

Went from San Diego to the grand canyon via Joshua tree in one day which took about 11 hours and was maybe 500 miles or so. Absolutely knackering. Actually followed up by another 400 miles the next day ending up in Vegas.

Another time from Cleveland to Asbury park in a day which was 500 miles as well.

Staying awake is the only danger!

Sounds like bruuuno's plan is pretty fun. You'll probably see some great scenery on the way.

Longest drive I've done was Barcelona to Bilbao 400 miles, did it overnight as less traffic but wouldn't recommend as nearly nodded off a couple of times.

My uncle emigrated to Sydney in 70s then decided to move to Perth drove the 2500 miles in a motorhome, no mobiles then of course, he said they passed several burnt out vehicles on the side of the road, he was told to set light to your vehicle if you break down as the only chance someone might see you.

Oh I think it is where motorways are concerned. You can chat to passengers and listen to music easily.

I ride bikes for interesting, bending roads really. We try to keep off m/ways because it is more boring on a bike but usually need to do some m/ways for time or all that's reasonably available.

Make sure you take the Hills Angels for ‘Benny Specials’

Will be lovely driving through the Caingourms this time of year.

Make sure you take a break and fill up with fuel before entering the national park and if you don't have a spare wheel make sure you have one of those tyre sealant inflation kits just in case and some jump leads. Once your on the national park you won't have a phone signal for miles.

Goose, that’s the ferry I took but as usual the hard working Italians cocked it up.

Six of us got the posh ferry with the pool, bar, shops etc.

The other six got the freighter with eff all on it apart from 220 channels of Polish tv.

Longest 24 hours in my life.

Last year I drove from Upminster to Portgower, 639 miles. I set off at 4.30am, stopped on the A1 near Blyth for a coffee and wee, then again at Carlisle to refuel and a McD's brekkie.
Next stop was just past Stirling for a coffee and obligatory pee then headed to my destination, took just over 11 hours all in all and managed to listen to nearly all of a wonderful audiobook about forensic pathology, happy days.
